Something I learned today from the book “The Making of a Manager” by Julie Zhuo is how to deal with the situation when you are a new manager of a team and need to have a report open up to you.
The book recommends for such a situation to try to gain the trust of the report by actually opening up yourself and taking the leading step. This can be by sharing a story where you failed in something, or sharing some weakness of yours, in other words talking about a personal vulnerability.
